Tips when choosing a dialysis centre

tips-img.jpg

  1. Consider the location and distance from your home.
  2. Ask about the availability of treatment slots at the centre.
  3. Make an appointment to visit the centre.
  4. Assess the reliability, professionalism and friendliness of the staff.
  5. Check the cleanliness of the centre.
  6. Ask about the clinical standards practice at the centre. If there are several choices of dialysis centres, choose the one with accreditation as they have specific standards to comply with to ensure patient safety.
  7. Ask about any extra services the centre provides.

The Purpose of Haemodialysis

Kidneys essentially maintain the correct balance of salt, water and other minerals in the blood needed for healthy bodily functions. Any excess is filtered and excreted as waste, through urine.

In the early stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD), you do not need dialysis. The stages of chronic kidney disease can last for many years. But if your kidneys fail, you will need dialysis or a kidney transplant to keep you alive.

Symptoms Of Kidney Disease

Changes In Urination

Urinating in bigger or smaller amounts than usual, feeling pressure when urinating, changes in the color of urine, foamy or bubbly urine or having to get up at night to urinate.

Fatigue or weakness

A buildup of toxins or a shortage of red blood cells (anemia) can cause these problems when the kidneys begin to fail.

Shortness of breath

Kidney failure is sometimes confused with asthma or heart failure because fluid can build up in the lungs.

Swelling of the feet, ankles, hands or face

Liquids the kidneys can't remove may accumulate in the tissues.

Ammonia breath or an ammonia or metal taste in the mouth

Waste buildup in the body can cause bad breath, changes in taste or an aversion to protein-rich foods such as meat.

Nausea and vomiting

Nausea and vomiting can occur as kidney function decreases. This can be due to the build-up of wastes in your body or a side effect from dialysis or medication.

Itching

Waste buildup in the body can cause severe itching, especially of the legs.

Loss of appetite

Some people find that food tastes different. Some no longer like foods they once craved.

Back or side pain

The kidneys are located on either side of the spine, in the back.

" I have been dialyzing for the past 4 years and I'm with DaVita for the past 3 years. The centre is very clean and well maintained. I'm very happy to receive good treatment service here along with good care from the nurses. I would definitely recommend DaVita to others if they are in search for a good dialysis centre".

"Action speaks louder than words would best described, SN Laimin. He works quickyly and quietly, have the patience of a saint and most of all, lightest fingers when it comes to injection. One could hardly feel the needle sticking into your veins. One less nightmare being a dialysis patient. Others should learn from him."
